Xabi Alonso Calls for a Miracle

Bayern Munich Dominate Leverkusen in First Leg

Leverkusen’s Heavy Defeat to Bayern

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a humbling 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

The match, played at the Allianz Arena, saw Harry Kane scoring twice (9’, 75’) and Jamal Musiala adding another (54’), putting the Bavarians in full control of the tie.

Alonso Admits Qualification Looks Unlikely

Speaking after the match, Xabi Alonso acknowledged the uphill battle his team now faces in the return leg.

The Spanish coach admitted that overturning the 0-3 deficit would require something extraordinary.

“A second goal, a red card, and a penalty – everything went in Bayern’s favour. We must mature and handle these situations better” Alonso stated.

“Mistakes and small details make the difference. It’s a bitter night for us. A goal more or less can change everything, but we need a miracle to qualify”

Despite the heavy defeat, Alonso remains hopeful, citing past football comebacks as motivation.

“We have seen incredible turnarounds in football, and we must believe. It’s not over yet – we still have another match at home” he added.

First Defeat Against Bayern for Alonso

This loss marks the first time Alonso has been beaten by Bayern Munich since taking charge of Leverkusen in October 2022.

Before this match, he had managed three victories and four draws against the German champions.

The return leg in Leverkusen will take place in two weeks, where Alonso’s team will need an inspired performance to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
