Liverpool’s €150m Bid Greenlit

Signalling a potential club-record and Premier League–record transfer
  • The 22-year-old German playmaker has already accepted personal terms

This landmark fee reflects Liverpool’s renewed ambition to challenge on all fronts.

Record-Breaking Figures

Initially, Liverpool put forward €135 million, a sum that would have been a club record and the highest fee paid by an English club at the time.

However, Bayer Leverkusen swiftly rejected this offer. As a result, Liverpool’s sporting director, Michael Edwards, sanctioned an improved bid of €150 million, matching Leverkusen’s asking price. If finalised, the deal will eclipse Liverpool’s current record transfer of Darwin Núñez, signed for €85 million in 2022.

Furthermore, Wirtz’s move would surpass Enzo Fernández’s €121 million fee—paid by Chelsea in 2023—as the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.

Why Wirtz?

Over the past two seasons, Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising midfielders. With a market value of €140 million (Transfermarkt), he has demonstrated creativity, vision, and technical skill in the Bundesliga.

In addition, his performances for Germany’s national team have underlined his readiness for a bigger stage. Liverpool see him as a long-term replacement for aging midfielders and as a player capable of elevating their attacking play.

Given the Reds’ recent struggles to secure top-four finishes, Wirtz’s arrival would bolster Jurgen Klopp’s side as they aim to reclaim a Champions League berth.

Negotiation Status & Timelines

Despite Wirtz’s agreement, negotiations remain sensitive. Leverkusen are keen to keep hold of a player integral to their title ambitions, but they face pressure if a definitive bid arrives.

Liverpool are expected to finalise terms swiftly, hoping to wrap up the transfer before the window closes. Should the deal proceed, Wirtz would join fellow German internationals at Anfield, offering both immediate impact and long-term potential.
