Manchester United Start Summer Clear-Out

Amorim’srebuild begins after historic Newcastle humiliation

Two Veterans Released

Manchester United have made their first big decision ahead of the 2025/26 season

This comes after United’s latest blow – a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, which has plunged the club further into crisis.

It was their second loss of the season to the Magpies and the worst since 1931, according to OPTA stats.

Manager Ruben Amorim has decided to part ways with veteran players Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton, both of whom will leave Old Trafford when their contracts expire this summer.

Amorim making plans for the future

Since his arrival in November 2024, Amorim has struggled to inspire the Red Devils.

In 32 matches, he has recorded only 13 wins, alongside 7 draws and 12 defeats. United currently sit in a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League with just 38 points.

Determined to rebuild the squad, Amorim has reportedly decided not to offer new deals to 37-year-old Evans and 39-year-old Heaton, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Both players’ contracts will expire at the end of the current campaign.

Minimal impact this season

This season, goalkeeper Tom Heaton made only one appearance – and that was for the U21 side in the EFL Trophy against Barnsley. In contrast, Jonny Evans has featured 12 times, scoring once.

Their limited contributions, combined with their age, appear to have prompted Amorim’s decision. United are looking to inject fresh energy into the team as they prepare for a new era.

Market values drop as exits confirmed

Evans is currently valued at €1.5 million, while Heaton holds a market worth of €250,000, according to Transfermarkt.

Although they have both had long careers, it is clear their time at Manchester United is coming to an end.

Newcastle's historic thrashing adds pressure

The recent defeat at St. James’ Park has only intensified the pressure. Newcastle’s 4-1 victory marked the first time since 2001 they scored four goals past United and completed a league double against them – something they hadn’t done since 1930-31.
