Courtois Returns as a “Devil” After Conflict with Former Coach
Thibaut Courtois (32), Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, has decided to return to Belgium’s national team.
The announcement was made by the new manager of the “Red Devils”, Rudi Garcia (61).
Who successfully convinced the shot-stopper to end his nearly two-year absence from international duty.
Courtois had been in conflict with former coach Domenico Tedesco (39).
After the latter chose to hand the captain’s armband to Romelu Lukaku instead of him, following Kevin De Bruyne’s injury.
Upset by the decision, the goalkeeper decided not to play for Belgium as long as Tedesco was in charge.
Courtois' Return, a Major Boost for Belgium
Rudi Garcia confirmed Courtois’ return and emphasised his importance to the squad:
“He will return. This is fantastic news for Belgium. I have always considered Thibaut to be the best goalkeeper in the world, but we are also well covered with Matz Sels and Koen Casteels,” Garcia told L’Equipe.
The goalkeeper last played for Belgium on 17 June 2023 in a 1-1 draw against Austria in the EURO 2024 qualifiers.
In total, Courtois has won 102 caps for his national team, keeping a clean sheet in 51 of those matches.
Crucial Matches Ahead for Belgium in the Nations League
Belgium will face Ukraine on 20 and 23 March in two decisive fixtures for promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League.
With Courtois back between the posts, Belgium’s chances of securing favourable results have significantly increased.
Rudi Garcia Also Trying to Convince Axel Witsel
In addition to Courtois’ return, manager Rudi Garcia is also attempting to bring Axel Witsel (36, Atletico Madrid) back into the national squad.
“I also met with Axel Witsel in Madrid. It was a pleasure to talk to him. He is an intelligent player. You should never say never,” Garcia told The Athletic.
With Courtois back and the potential return of Witsel, Belgium is strengthening its squad for upcoming competitions.
