Eddie Howe Hails Doctor’s Swift Intervention
A Close Call at St James’ Park
Record under Howe: 5th place in 2024/25
He was forced to hand the reins to assistant Jason Tindall, but has since returned to the dug-out ahead of Saturday’s clash with Ipswich.
Praise for Dr Paul Catterson
Howe admitted he initially downplayed his symptoms. “I’m one of those people, like many men, who won’t admit to doctors that I feel ill,” he explained. “Had it not been for Dr Catterson’s swift intervention, the result could have been very different.”
He also thanked the NHS for “first-class” care during his stay, adding that the experience has left him “almost 100% mentally, if not quite physically”.
“I’m very grateful to the medical team for acting so quickly,” Howe said. “They were fantastic.”

Impact on the Team’s Momentum
Newcastle currently sit fifth in the Premier League, on 59 points, clinging to a Champions League qualification spot with four games to play. Howe’s absence coincided with a dip in form, but his return has injected renewed optimism.
His leadership and tactical nous are credited with transforming the Magpies into genuine title contenders. Under his guidance, the side have displayed a high-pressing style and resolute defending, qualities he attributes in part to a fit and focused squad.

Managing Health and Performance
This episode has underscored the importance of player and staff welfare at Newcastle. Howe intends to adopt a more cautious approach to his health in future.
“I’ve learned that even managers need to listen to their bodies,” he remarked. The club’s medical department, led by Dr Catterson, will continue to monitor Howe closely, ensuring he is fully fit for the run-in.
Looking Ahead to Champions League Push
With Ipswich visiting St James’ Park on Saturday, Howe faces a pivotal test. A positive result would strengthen Newcastle’s hold on fourth place and keep Champions League football within reach. “We’re focused on the next match,”
Howe stated. “The squad is ready and I’m grateful to be back. We have a big few weeks ahead.”
