Pep Guardiola Dismisses Concerns Over Jack Grealish
Guardiola: Performance Matters More Than Private Life
Grealish’s £100m move from Aston Villa in 2021 came with high expectations
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has made it clear that he judges Jack Grealish based on his on-field performances rather than his off-field activities.
Recent reports highlighted Grealish’s night out in Newcastle, which took place on his day off following City’s FA Cup victory over Plymouth.
However, Guardiola remains unconcerned.
“A day off is a day off. They have private lives to do whatever they want,” Guardiola stated.
“I judge what I see on the pitch, the training sessions, and the performances in the game.”
Grealish’s Season and Future at Manchester City
The 28-year-old England international has struggled for regular starts this season, making just six Premier League starts and ten substitute appearances.
Since 4 December, he has started only one league game. Grealish’s £100m move from Aston Villa in 2021 came with high expectations, but his form has been inconsistent.
Speculation about his future is increasing, especially as Manchester City look to strengthen their squad further in the summer transfer window.
With his contract running until 2027, his place in Pep Guardiola’s long-term plans remains uncertain.
Guardiola, however, insists that no decisions will be made until the season concludes.
“What happens with Jack and everyone else will be evaluated at the end of the season. Right now, we are focused on competing for important trophies.”
England Ambitions and Euro 2024 Omission
Grealish’s limited game time has also impacted his international aspirations.
He was left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad, raising concerns about his role in the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Guardiola acknowledged the player’s ambitions but emphasised that club performance must come first.
“It’s good to have dreams of playing in the World Cup and Euros, but what matters now is delivering on the pitch,” he said.
Manchester City’s Squad Evolution
City have already made significant squad changes, bringing in four new players in the winter transfer window, including Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush for £59m.
Further signings are expected in the summer as the club aims to refresh the squad after a challenging Premier League and Champions League campaign.
While Grealish’s future remains uncertain, Guardiola’s stance is clear—only performance on the pitch will determine his fate at Manchester City.
